A Good Time To Bury Bad News!

Despite being a dark rainy night hundreds of people walked the dignified monthly Silent Vigil on 14th October 2019 for the 72 people who died in the Grenfell Tower fire who were remembered individually by name - Forever in Our Hearts.

It is 28 months since the fire and the first Inquiry Report is due. It will focus on what happened the night of the fire, why it spread so quickly and the response of the emergency services and other organisations on the night itself. It is expected to be hard hitting and make serious recommendations for change which the Government must act on to stop something like this happening again.

Grenfell United which consists of survivors and bereaved families expressed

concern that the media have lost focus on the key issues which caused the

fire and contributed to the deaths and the changes that are needed now.

They commended Inside Housing as the only media which is consistently

pressurising for tower block fire safety with the Never Again campaign.

It beggars belief that after waiting so long the first phase of the Grenfell Inquiry is due to report on 30 October – the day before Brexit! Requests for publication on a different day were turned down- it seems to be a good day to bury bad news!

They ask us all to highlight the inquiry report and its recommendations by:

  • Writing to our MPs

  • Using social media and contacting any media connections

More is now known but not enough action has been taken. This opportunity must not be lost and the recommendations ignored as happened to the findings from the Lakanal House Inquest.

Tower Blocks UK are pleased to support Grenfell United and will do all we can to highlight the Inquiry, and will comment on the report when we see it. We are currently developing more accessible information and resources to equip all tower blocks residents to ensure that their tower blocks are safe.
